Finishing Grit

What is the finest grit to go down to before applying coating after the pore fill ?

180, 240, 320 etc

I don't go past 220 , I want to allow some tooth for the finish to grab onto. Sanding too fine can burnish the wood and if your finishes can't melt into the wood ,then it sets on the top and can chip easy

The only exception I know of is Tru-Oil; you can sand as high as you like and there are no adhesion issues.

Depends on the type of finish. Lacquers I generally stop at 180, depending on the type of spruce used on the top I may go 220 on it. French polish I'll go to 220 all around. The purpose of the final prep sand is to create an anchor for the finish to hold on to. So it is best if that is done as close to applying the finish as possible. If it sits around the wood will start to oxidize and the adhesion of the finish will start to become compromised.
