Side of fret board

Hi all.

I have a question regarding the finish on the side of a fret board.

I am spraying a satin finish on a neck and was wondering if anyone also sprays the side of the fret board.
I have a store bought Martin that appears to have finish all the way up to the top edge of the fret board.

Thanks

I have always taped off the sides with the fretboard top when I finish. I use a paste wax on the fretboard and apply it to the fretboard sides as well. But I suppose you could do it either way.

I tape off only the top of the fretboard and spray finish on the sides of the fretboard. I am good with that look. But I agree not finishing the fretboard would be good as well.

Of course, if you bind the fretboard edges, then just cover the fretboard while keeping the binding top and sides exposed for finish. Anyone else do this differently?

Yes I am curious about the treatment of the binding myself. I bound mine with white oak and BWB purfling. I was going to pore file and finish the edge but what about the top. How is this usually done. Should I finish the top of the binding then sand And taper the edge of the finish flush with the rest of the fingerboard? And what of the purfling? I'm concerned about dirt from grubby fingers getting into the pores over time.
