Pore Filling - Z- Poxy

I had some time this week, and started the 3rd application of Z-poxy Pore fill. I am using Todd Stock's Youtube videos as my method. Overall, going fairly well. I think I got a little too aggressive in the sanding at times, but the African Mahogany pores seem to be filling. I am hopeful after the 3rd application I will be fine.

Glenn,

The guitars look great. I followed Todd's video as well with great results.

I really like using Z-Poxy to pore fill. It really pops the grain. Your guitars are looking great!

If I may enquire, how far does this product go. In other words how much of it to do a complete grain filling on an acoustic guitar.
Cheers- Ed

Ed, i bought my zpoxy about a year ago and used it for the back sides and top of an all-koa box (3 coats) and the neck, back and sides of a walnut guitar (4 coats on the body, 3 on the neck). I've got about 1/2 bottle of epoxy and hardner left, so it seems like you could get 4 guitars out of it.

hth,

I do three to four applications of zpoxy for each guitar, followed by a wipe of thinned zpoxy (10% alcohol) to even out the effect on the surface after sanding. I finished 3 guitars from a package of zpoxy. It does not take much to coat a guitar, I tended to mix up three times more than I use. If I fine tuned how much zpoxy I mix, I could probably get 4 to 5 guitars out of a package.

It really does not take much for each session. I have done two guitars, all koa, so top, back, sides and mahogany neck, and a claro walnut guitar. If you think about your goal, filling the pores and leaving next to nothing on the rest of the wood, you will realize it takes very little. I have two thirds of my bottles left after the two guitars. I mix a very small amount.
Todd Stock has video's on youtube on how to use epoxy to pore fill. If you go to youtube and search for "epoxy pore filling" it will be one of the first results. You might need to add "acoustic guitar" to the search terms. I can not access YouTube from work, or I would post a link. Searching for "Todd Stock epoxy" might return the result you are looking for as well. He shows how little you need to mix and he even mixes too much if I recall correctly. Plus, Todd shows the technique you want to employ when applying the epoxy. I used a credit card type of applicator. My company gives out holiday calendars on credit card sized, plastic cards. Perfect for this use.
Try it on scrap. It really pops the grain. Check out my koa OM, which incidentally, has a Manzer style wedge:
