Spraying Nitro Lacquer

So I'm out of vinyl sealer. I've always sprayed it under the nitro because, well, I've assumed you're supposed to. Right?

Has anyone routinely skipped the sealer and just started with the lacquer, and if so how have the results been for you?

Thanks for any input.

Kevin

I have never used a vinyl sealer before Nitro. All of my guitars are shellaced and then nitro sprayed. Never had a problem. Anything sticks to shellac. I believe it is the best undercoat. for any finish! Good lick!

Hey Sylvan
Do you wipe or spray the shellac?

I seal with shellac, 1lb cut. I just wipe it on with a folded paper towel. As you know, it cures in about 15 min. I usually add a second coat and then give it a very light sanding w/ 320 grit. If I have to use pore filler, I apply one additional seal coat on top.
Hope that helps.

BlindBo is absolutely right. I do the same! Simple but very effective!

When Woodcraft stopped carrying the Mohawk/Behr vinyl sealer, I called up the manufacturer. Their customer service person said that skipping that step is fine, since their formulation of their instrument lacquer works well without it.
