Adventures in Tru-Oil
Re: Adventures in Tru-Oil
I'm glad that it worked out for you. Wish there was a way we could see how it looks. <hint> :-)

OK... Here are two pics, one without flash and one with flash. It seems weird trying to get a picture that shows the shine/ glare of the finish!

Looks very nice, good job. I like the oil for how it brings out the grain, the gloss is a bonus.
Thanks for the tips.

Good to hear it worked out for you, and it looks nice too. I forget if you mentioned or not - no porefiller on this one? I skipped it on my first, it was rosewood and truoil finish as well.

Re: Adventures in Tru-Oil
I used a pore filler, but it was my first try with it and I did an ok job. I think I mixed it a little on the sloppy side. And just like the tru oil, the sides filled better than the back. Who knows...
Anyway I'm thankful for all the help. I really didn't want to sand it down all over again. I was afraid I was going to have to start saving those "tasty parts" from my t-shirts like Tony.... (Just kidding, I got it the first time!)

If i could digress a little bit, how does tru oil affect the sound compared with a nitro finish?

Re: Adventures in Tru-Oil
Its not a matter of tone. I dont think there would be any discernable affect, though many would argue that point based on the thickness of the finish. People choose TruOil because it is nontoxic, and does not stink to high heaven like nitro. It is also not explosive, like nitro lacquer. The finish thickness with TruOil, lacquer, or french polish with shellack can be as thick or thin as you like. Its just harder to get a thicker finish with TruOil or french polish.msanch24 wrote:If i could digress a little bit, how does tru oil affect the sound compared with a nitro finish?

As usual, there are different opinions.:-) I myself have compared 'similar' instruments with each finish and cannot tell any difference. The product is not so much a 'penetrating' oil as some others, in fact it's more like a varnish.
