Pore Filling - Z- Poxy
Re: Pore Filling - Z- Poxy
Well, in that case it sounds like a bargain. Are there any finishes you dont want to put this underneath? I mean, it will be OK to Shellac, French Polish over it on mahogany? I thought that it migh be difficult to source here in South Africa but seems that there is a distributor and quite popular in the hobby community.

Shellac on zpoxy is great. No problem french polishing on zpoxy. I also used shellac between zpoxy and the water based lacquer )EM6000 and KTM-SV.

I just ordered some Z-Poxy. John, you said that you wipe a thinned coat (10% alcohol) before applying the finish and after sanding. Do you go straight to finishing after the thinned coat application without sanding the thinned coat?

I padded on some shellac before spraying the finish. I did not sand the zpoxy off. I applied a very thin layer with a rag.David L wrote:I just ordered some Z-Poxy. Here is the link to Todd Stock's third part of his z-poxy pore filling series. I believe he uses a scotch brite pad to scuff the z-poxy before applying the finish, but I am not certain. I did use some 400 grit paper with a very light touch to scuff the entire surface before putting on the lacquer. So far, no adhesion issues, but it has only been 6 weeks or so since the Koa OM was finished. The owner has yet to report that anything has gone awry.
I also have heard about using denatured alcohol on the surface of the z-poxy before applying the lacquer, but I did not go that route.
If you watch the whole video from Todd Stock, let us all know how he does it! He seems to have success with his finishing schedule.

Re: Pore Filling - Z- Poxy
this was a topic at the ASIA symposium . Many of the guys are using it. I heard from credit cards to razor blades as applicators. I think it may be less troublesome than the pore o paq. It is sure a bit less difficult for the beginner and you can't argue the results

I watched all three parts, he uses a 6" heavy rubber squeegee for application and he scuffs with scotch brite before applying finish.

What type alcohol is used to thin Z-Poxy, denatured?

Yes, he uses Denatured Alcohol. You could also use Everclear if you have it around and I used isopropyl once because I ran out of DNA and did not know any better. Worked out fine, though I wouldnt recommend it only because nobody else does and I have no idea of the long term effects of using it. With the final "wash coat" of zpoxy, I thinned it much more than 10% as Todd suggests and THAT does work fine. However, if you are careful with your application, you wont have much sanding to do and thus, you will not have much in the way of sand through spots to fix with the thinned coat. I sanded almost back to bare wood and then did the wash coat because I didn't want the z-poxy to weigh down the soundboard since it was Koa and I had to pore fill it. On the back and sides I would be less concerned with that.David L wrote:What type alcohol is used to thin Z-Poxy, denatured?

I used ever clear, and it worked great. I also used the squeegee, and really liked it. I think it helps to get a very thin coat. I am working on the necks of the 2 guitars now, and I just used the gloves to spread. I am plaaning to French polish the bodies, and true oil the necks.
