Re: Finishing schedule question
I do use my hands here. I like to use a satin on the neck and will just scuff sand it with a 320 dry. I also do Gloss the head veneer so that would be the block and go up the grits and polish.

Re: Finishing schedule question
So you just stop sanding with 320 to provide the satin finish? I've been sanding all day on the neck and I'm very happy with the way it's turned out ... but I wasn't sure how to get the satin finish. I've already sanded to 1000 grit but like the way it looks as-is. Maybe just stop here but still polish the veneer on the head.

Use a small pink eraser wrapped in your paper. It is flexible and with a little pressure you can maintain a curve as you sand the shaft. Stay away from the edges of the headstock (don't try and sand the edges). These work quite well. I also have a thick dense foam block about 1.5" thick, 3" x 2" that works great for wet sanding. It came in a micromesh kit I purchased from LMI. The flat eraser you will find works quite well.
