I also use behlen I just shoot the sealer on the top. I don't like to mix the shellac and vinyl. I wonder if Brian does the same?

I typically do not seal my tops till I am ready to begin finishing. The little but of spruce that pulls up from my binding tape is no problem for me because I have not sanded my top at all yet.

To answer your question, best practice these days would be to only use the vinyl sealer or scrape away all the shellac. Some of the modern polymerized acrylics do not play well with shellac. If it were me, I would spray a seal coat that was reduced maybe 30% before cutting my channels and then bind, sand, and reseal as recommended. I would not want the sealer under my glue at my bindings.
You never know what you are capable of until you actually try....
