Shellac over Pre Cat sanding sealer

Post by ian12 »

Hi All

Does anyone know how durable shellac would be over Pre Cat sanding sealer, the reason for asking is the precat sands really well and I thought I could build a base with this and then french polish with shellac to get a great finish. I have tried this and it seems to take well but was wondering of the long term durabilty.

Cheers

Shellac should bond to the sealer just fine. Being under the finish it will have no effect on durability. While it may look polished sooner,You will need to be sure to get at least 3mils of shellac on top of it or it will wear through fairly quickly.

Many thanks - I suppose shellac sanding sealer would be the better choice.

Shellac sanding sealer is just a very light cut of shellac, usually a 1lb cut.. The cut is not all that important when french polishing as you are always adjusting it at the pad with alcohol, though a 1lb. cut may be a bit light.
