I bought a loverly 1934 L-00 at an auction cheap and now have to repair the reasons it was cheap. I have had great tips from John and a few others and have started by patching a major hole in a side. Lucky that I had to take the back off as it made it easier - I understand there are luthiers who can do this with the back still on!!

Great start Ed. I just started on a top and binding replacement on a 1971 Gibson J-40 (not 45) today. It has a double x brace pattern, can't even believe the top could move. I'm going to give it a top bracing more similar to what you are working on (Martin style).
