tried the heat cartridge THEY SUCK
too large a hole
used the stew mac needle for years but I found this

Hard to beat the age old basketball filling needle with the end cut off above the air holes. Cheap, available locally, needs only a reasonable size hole, and the threaded end fits nicely into surgical tubing that also fits nicely on the steam vent from a yard sale espresso maker or the second choice jury rigged to a tea kettle.

I found the 1/16 tubing allows for deeper penetration but without having to create work in fixing the hole everything hide under the fret I think I need to make a video on this

I have the solid rod and I totally agree. It sucks rotten eggs! The hole you have to make is HUGE.

This is what I use. It's long, so I cut it in half, leaving a reserve tube. I bought this 4 years ago and I'm still using it.
