blackened CA

Post by phavriluk »

I bought some blackened CA to fill little gaps between purfling and the soundboard, and between purfling and the binding. Used it,and oops, it's rubberized. If the gaps arr shallow, little strings appear when scraping the area. I didn't fill the gaps.

So:

(1) is all blackened CA blackened with rubber? Vendors are shy about telling customers what they're getting.
(2) what is used to blacken epoxy, which may be a happier choice for me. Three unsatisfactory passes with the CA burned a lot of time.

Thanks, folks.

Peter, I can't answer your question, but can offer some suggestions. Lee Valley sells a black CA glue, supposedly for filling gaps in woodworking. They might answer your question. I've used epoxy blackened with ebony dust and it works fine. Also a black lacquer stick. And when I was picture framing I found a glue called Maxim Raven which is black (when it dries); I think it's an AR glue. It was marketed by a company called Kool Tack which makes foamcore with adhesive on it for dry mounting. So if you have a decent picture framer nearby see if you can get some to try. I only ever saw litre bottles but you may be able to buy or beg less. I mentioned this glue in an old thread here:

There are unhelpful links in that thread but I see one supplier here (besides your local frame shop):

Thanks for the lead. The black powder price is modest - - - four bucks. Eight bucks to ship? Not today. If I have other uses for the black powder I'll reconsider.
