The ones for solid headstock have a shaped tip which guides the string and the slotted ones are a straight post which inserts into the hole. Some brands have rollers. Some brands have different length posts which can be important depending on the thickness of your headstock
Thanks. I thought that was the case, but wasn’t sure. Im in my first build and almost to the drilling the headstock for tuners!

I'm thinking this might be a job for the CNC. Any thoughts on that?

Slot-head tuners have the holes for the strings more in the middle of the posts, and solid-head tuners have the holes closer to the end.

Cutting the slots, you mean? Seems like a reasonable idea to me. I do them on my milling machine, but the cnc might be even better, especially if you could program it to cut the ramps.

In Vectric VCarve or Aspire that is done with the fluting toolpath.
