Cherry Pitch Pockets

Hi,

I have some beautiful, locally grown and milled curly cherry, that has several pitch pockets that go all the way through. It was milled decades ago and stored in the rafters of the local lumber company, so the wood is very stable.

I've read in woodworking forums that a 2 part epoxy is typically used to fill the holes. Can anyone tell me specifically what kind of epoxy, or should I get some sort of filler from the local woodworking store? I figured I would bend the sides, before filling the holes, due to the heat of bending.

Thanks

Not sure if this article would work on Cherry, but I'd imagine the principle is one in the same, be it pin or worm holes & pitch-pockets. You'd think pitch-pockets would fall into the same type of fix...?

Thank you for posting the url. I saw something similar in a general woodworking forum and wondered if this was the right fix for guitars. This wood has a lot of pitch holes, but I would like to use it because it's really beautiful and cut a long time ago.

Here is a piece maade by a local high-end cabinet maker. Check the picture second from the right of the 7 along the bottom:

He uses a 2 part epoxy that he gets at the local hardware store and he tints it, usually very dark brown or black, but sometimes left clear. I think that a good one to use would be one of the epoxies meant to build up a thick clear finish like a bar top - you can get them in smaller quantities. I think on cherry there are enough black lines that black would look good. Once it cures for a day it scrapes and sands well - this is what I used here:

I prefer system 3 epoxies. For something like this I use their general purpose epoxy. Tinting is optional, sometimes i do, sometimes I don't.

Thank you. I wasn't sure which epoxy to use.
