Removing set neck.I did use Hide glue when I assembled it

Post by LeftyAl »

Has anyone ever removed a set neck. When I put this kit 335 together ,I used hide glue.I was sure that the neck was going to be prefect because I temporarily put on both E strings and they seemed to run down the neck perfectly. However after giving it enough time for the glue to dry I restrung with new strings and the strings run off ever so slightly. Not enough that the at the 22 fret the fat E is about 1/16 from the edge and the small E is 3/16 's from the edge.It has to be re-done.I have a heat gun.I'm going to do it this weekend .I sprayed several coats of lacquer on the body and it looks great,so I don't want to cause any damage from the heat.Anyone here ever do something lke this before?I would appreciate any help.I was going to go at it from the neck pick up route. Thanks for any help

heat gun may not work. I use steam and you can inject that into the joint. Dry heat may cause damage.

Initial caveat: I've never done this, but...

Here's how my friend Carter says it's done. Pull the fret just beyond the point where the neck meets the body; the 13th or 15th fret, probably. Drill a small hole down through into the vacant space behind the dovetail pin on the neck. Hook up a piece of hypodermic tubing to a steam source. McMaster-Carr sells tubing. http://www.mcmaster.com Start injecting steam into the joint.
Apply heat to the fretboard extension over the body, working a thin blade under it to loosen it. Give the heel of the neck a tap every so often to encourage movement, or arrange clamps to apply pressure to get the neck to move.

More or less. Somebody who has actually done this can undoubtedly give more coherent directions.

this is a 335 they are more similar to a neck through. The joint isn't like an acoustic. It is more like a pocket. I have pulled them I pull the pick ups and drill into the neck pocket from the pick up . Here is a vid link to the neck joint design

I'm glad somebody knows what they are talking about, because I frequently don't! :-)

(John, assuming it WAS an acoustic neck, is my explanation generally correct?)

yes if this is a neck block joint for the most part that is correct. In fact I will start a thread on this subject. Maybe we can get people to post some pics

I was all set to start heating the neck joint when i came across an article on My Les Paul. Some one asked a similar question about a neck that was not glued in straight to the strings. The response was if it's only off a little bit, instead of ungluing the neck fill in the saddle and tail piece wholes with dowels and redrill them after determining there correct location.I'm going to give this some thought and check around various guitar sites before doing anything just yet. Anyone with any more advice would be appreciated thanks.I let you know what I end up doing here. One thing that does woory me is if I heat up the neck joint ,I may also loosen up other glue joints that I don't want to.Also the binding is all around this area

moving the bridge is not that hard and you most likely won't see the plug you only need to move this about 1/16 in.

Thanks, going to pick up the dowel tomorrow. I think I can do this .I was afraid of ruining the lacquer finish and binding.
