Stain on Rosewood

Hey guys -

Check out the pics below. The arrows point to some discoloring on my EIR back plate. This didn't show up until I ran it through a thickness planner. The discoloring is both sides of the plate. The splotches almost look like water stains.

Have you run into this before? Is this normal? I'm afraid they will detract from the beauty of the finished. Is there a way to get rid or minimize them?

I think that, being the stains have a yellowish hue to them, once you've pore-filled/stained the Rwd, they won't show up. Yellow is one of, of not, the easiest color to cover over. What happens when you wet it down w/ Naphtha? I had a back set that was hit & miss color-wise & when all was said & done, they you could not detect any color differentiation.

I always use a stain to help pop the grain and even the colors. It is wood and it is not uncommon to see color variation. That what I see here looks more obvious than others. It may be in the wood or a chemical stain of some type.

Thanks guys. I won't be back in my shop until this weekend. I'll take another look at things then and make a decision.

John - I remember reading that you use Jasco filler and add Minwax dark walnut stain. Is that still part of your process? Is that how you'd approach this, or should I stain the wood before pore-filling?

I have switched to pore o paq but if you can find jasco it is a very similar product

I usually pore-fill w/ Bartley's Paste Wood Filler, but I'm running low on my last pint. I found a couple qt cans of Bartley's Dark listed on ebay, listed at $30 for 2 qts. The seller made a listing error & actually had only 1 can of the Dark, so it cost me $14 + ship. IIRC ~ I made an offer...?

He's since listed a 2 more qts of light filler. You can tint it darker w/ stain or tints to achieve the level of darkness you want. Since I was a painter by trade, I have a rack of universal tints I use. Raw Umber & Black would certainly darker it up...
