Brass inserts for bolt on necks

I have been using this type of brass insert, but they can not be the right ones for end grain in Mahogany. They do not cut in, they crumble the wood. I always flood CA around them, and don't expect one to fail, but I need to use a different one.
What do you all suggest?

I've been using those also Kevin. Are you installing them w/ the slotted-end going in first? I did install one w/ the slotted end pointing outward, using a screwdriver to try & drive it home, but when it started getting tight, the tips snapped. That said, I turned the insert around how it should be & went about putting them in the right way...duh!

I drill a small pilot hole, then take it up slowly w/ successive brad point drill bits to where I feel (IIRC 11/32") the insert will screw into the bore w/o issue. Once in, I drip CA around threads in to hold the insert in place. For screwing them in, I eyeball the alignment, then using a hex screw w/ a spacer, I drive it in straight w/ a socket. So far, it's worked for me.

I believe John H has been using the brass inserts also w/o fail (same w/ CF Martin)...?

Yes, thanks, I've been told now that I am putting them in upside down, thus my trouble.....I use a hex head bolt tightened down with a nut against the insert to screw them in with a ratchet, but upside down!!!!!!!!
I bet next time I have no trouble.
I have wondered the last two or 3 guitars why this was happening. At some point I started putting them in backwards...duh!

Not all inserts are created equal.
The ones you have pictured are designed for plastic. The heavier thread on the ones I listed cut into the end grain and are very secure. Install with the slot first , I use a shoulder bolt to instal and drill a 5/16 hole first

John I think I'm switching to the type you use. It just looks like it's going to cut in better sitting there.
Thanks for the help.

You'll really like the knife like edges on those inserts.

Is it wrong to use these on Dovetail necks for "added" security?

yes
the force of the bolt works opposite of the dovetail cheeks
