Material For Lining...

Hi all...

I haven't been around much of late, so it's good to get into the forum again.

I recently recieved a small shipment of spruce brace wood that turned out to be so far from vertical grain that it is virtually useless as bracing. It will cost more in time, money and frustration to send it back so I will find another use for it. I was thinking... so far on my eight guitars I have used only mahogany for the kerfed lining, and never really thought about other species for this crucial part of a guitar. Has anyone used or considered using spruce for lining? Pros and cons welcome!

Terry

it should be fine actually . The purpose of lining is just to add glue surface and spruce will do that .

I was just thinking about this same thing today! It might be nice to use a bit of aromatic cedar as kerfing...just a bit...so the guitar wont be eaten by moths...and it will smell nice.

Tony, I've wanted to try the same thing. Eastern ceder is stable, very strong, and fairly lightweight. I don't know why it wouldn't work (maybe someone else can think of a reason). I'v ebeen thinking of using solid, layered linings made from eastern cedar on the Cuban mahogany 00 I will soon start. I was thinking of cutting strips thin enough to glue in place without bending (saw on band saw then thickness in sanding machine). Each subsequent day add another layer till the desired thickness is met. After the final layer is dry, maybe I could use a small plane to bevel the inside corner. Should be stiffer than kerfed lining which is a good thing I would think.
