Here's one I just saved from another forum.The builder was Joel Stehr, and I was struck by 2 things. The simplicity and the beauty. I want to make this so bad for my son's guitar. He doesn't want any "bling" to speak of, so this would not be bling, but would be so totally interesting to me.
Please, does anyone know how it was done? Did he maybe set 4 points in a diamond shape? None of the rings are centered on the sound hole.
They're all just b/w/b purfling. What a wonderful idea.

The next one is spectacular to me as well. It was done by Kent Chasson. Seems to be in the same wood as the top, just making segments except for the inner and outer black rings.
If any builders would like to put in rosettes they like on this thread, please do so. I'll take all the ideas I can get. Maybe I can become a rosette master.

I edited this twice, after finding out who did both rosettes. I felt I needed to acknowledge their work.

Is anyone here old enough to remember "Spirograph"?

I like rosettes like the second one, that start and stop agin in the top wood. They really show the builder's skill. I've always been a sucker for a single thin pearl strip framed in b/w. On the otherhand, I hadn't really liked radial rosettes much until about a year ago, and now they are growing on me. I'll just do one of each I guess! (i couldn't image doing a matching radial purfs though)

Bob, they are all circles, you just change the center point to make each one. Now to lay it out, is another thing, and I don't know how that is done.

I do something similar but I use a triangle . The swirls do add a bit of design flair

I actually like the first one the best of all. What really amazes and intimidates me about lutherie is how precise and symmetrical everything is, though. Has anybody ever done a rosette that didn't follow a symmetrical pattern - or even a pattern at all? For example, my friend John had some tearout on his first build and he decided to place wood inlays there instead of just filling the spaces in with sawdust and CA glue.

I had asked Kent Chasson about this rosette in another forum, and that's when I saw the one in my first post on this thread. Here's the one I originally fell for.

Bob, the four rings are of equal size. It appears that from the center point if you where to have four starting points equidistant from the center point (that brings one edge what looks to be about an 1/8" from the soundhole) at north (0 deg), east (90 deg), south (180 deg), and west (270 deg). You would get that pattern.

Yeh, he told me last night that he had run the directions you said. He didn't tell the distance (1/8"), but I'll give that a look and try it.
