Changing The Plan

Post by segovia »

Hi

I have the Grelleir OM plan which has a scale length of 645 mm and 14 frets to the body.

Do you think this is adaptable if I wanted to make it shorter scale length and 13 frets to the body ?

As far as I can make out I would need to cut the neck joint in the right place (obvious) and move the bridge.

Would the bracing stay the same ?

Regards

You need to re-lay out the bracing so that the relationship of the bridge to xbrace is maintained or at least acceptable. As you move up the bridge plate make sure that there is room for the bridge pins without running in to the braces.

Would the angles (geometry) of the braces stay the same ?

the braces radius should be unchanged. The angle of the x will probably be fine but as john said make sure the bridge crosses the x and the pin holes miss the x, and hit the bridge plate. You don't say how short you want to go with the scale length... do the math (locate the bridge roughly the distance from fret 13 to scale length, compare to the location on the plan) drawing it out fullsize helps immensely.

On my last one i went longer on the scale and with a shorter (13fret) neck join; there was still less than 1 inch movement in the saddle and no change to the x angle or location. small adjustment of the finger braces and bridgeplate was all that was needed.
