I have 3 on a plate tuners for my slot head. Could you point me to or give me some good information/advice/tips for getting this installation done right? I do not have a drill press, could probably get to one if needed.
How should the tuner pegs fit through the outside and into the inside of the head?
Any help greatly appreciated.

the kit is the center to center spacing. You can make a simple drilling jig , and if you post where you are , you may find a member near you that can help out

I've done two now with the HF doweling jig. There are online reports of it being fairly inaccurate (with directions on correcting that issue) but I found mine to be close enough. It was cheap enough to take a gamble, IMO. Measure, mark, measure again, set the jig up, measure again, then drill. repeat 5x.

or buy a dedicated slothead jig for big money

As John says the key is center to center spacing.

Mine seemed ok out of the box, but others have had to adjust theirs.

One thing is that the marking on the jig, that is supposed to align with the center of the hole for each bushing, is not actually centered to the hole. So you have to re-mark that or align the jig to your headstock with another drill bit in the bushing so you can see the actual location of where your bit will be. hope that made sense.


In my case cutting the slots was far more intimidating than drilling for the tuners. Good Luck!

Couple of questions:

Drill the holes just larger than the posts?
How do you decide how far to drill into the center part of the head?

My posts were .234" and I used a .25" bit. Get as close as you can and ream to fit tight.

Only drill far enough to get the bases tight to the headstock. How far you go into the center of the headstock will depend on your headstock layout, slot width, etc.

So the tuner posts should fit snuggly through the "outside" holes? (is it ok if the posts do not contact the head as they pass through the outside part?, and snugly and just far enough into the center to be solid?
