Hey all...

Need some advice on how to cut my channels for the binding and purfling. Do I cut the purfling channel first, and then go back and do the binding channel? If so, I'm assuming that I cut the purfling channel to the width of the purfling plus the binding? Do you do it as exact as possible, or maybe a bit proud with respect to the sides?

Also, I was planning on using the herringbone for my purfling, which ai have and it's a bit tall. I'm assuming I can leave it higher than the soundboard and then scrape down?

What method are you using to cut the channels? It might make a difference which channel you cut first.

Yes, the piffling channel will be cut the width of the binding plus purfling. If its your first time, you may want to take shallow passes and sneak up on the final depth so you get in a few practice runs before the one that counts.

I cut the binding channel first, I use the bearing extention with the stewmac bits to make sure I do not index into the binding. In any case run the whole proceedure on some scrap to make sure you can do it on the guitar.

The only reason I do the bindings first is that I feel it gives me two passes to get the deep purflings. I do not really know if the matters.

Follow the pattern in the picture and you can avoid tear out.

I'm using the fleishman binding machine, with the StewMac router bit with bearings.

That being the case, if you don't have the bearing extensions, I would cut the purfling channel first so the bearing doesn't fall into the binding channel which would cut the purfling channel too deep.
