In my new new shop...

The work on my shop is moving along. A little slow today as two of the colleage kids I got to dig did not show up (I wonder why?) But the concrete guy came and cut a hole through the wall opening the craw space to the downstairs finished portion of the house.

I will keep posting photos as it progresses. The shop will be 20' by 12'. Two feet of the twelve will be taken up with cabinets and shelves. I am not sure exactly how I will lay out the rest but I plan to have a spray booth that folds out somehow. I have had the heating people out and I will be putting in a humidly control system including air filters and fresh air exchange. I will also have a real dust collection system. The shop vac does not really cut it with the drum sander.
The pictures show the start of the digging, the door cut into the wall and where the digging is now.

They were already there as part of the crawl space when the house was built. The house is on a hill so I have a daylight rambler. There is a finished basement for half of the house that is not underground on the down hill side. This crawl space is underground so we did not finished it. So all of the pipes and light were just put in when they made the house to make it easier to work in there. I was looking for space for the shop and the architect that designed the house suggested this space. The dirt you see in the picture was really part of the orignal hill slope we built on. The concrete walls in the picture are part of the footing for the house. Looking at the first picture you can see the footings step up. So I really can not go any deeper into the crawl as I run out of a wall.

As bleak as it looks the shop will end up looking like any finsihed room. No windows though so I really need to think through the lighting.

The ceiling in the picture is a about ground level. I will still have 2 foot crawl under the shop. The foot depth is probably -12':)

The floor depth is half the height of the ceiling multiplied by two plus a certain amount of compensation to ensure perfect intonation.
