Stupid Bonehead Coverup Suggestions

Post by Darryl Young »

Now how can you get more boneheaded than this???

Finally, got around to putting the strap buttons on my first build. Even watched a youtube video or two to get the location right on the pin going into the heel part of the neck. I even read a post about making sure you put the neck button on the correct side of the neck......and I scoffed that anyone would be so stupid as to do this.

Well, I had the neck pointing at me laying on the bench and pulled it up to drill......and I hadn't tightened the bit after placing tape on the bit to note the depth I wanted to drill. So after scoffing what a fool I am......I picked the guitar up WRONG SIDE UP, re-measured, and drilled on the bass side of the neck. Didn't even realize it till AFTER I had the button screwed in place. What a dweeb!

Anyhow, I can easily install the button on the correct side of the neck. Any pointers how to cover up the hole staring you in the face on the bass side of the neck??? What an idiot.

You might be able to match the grain lines with a plug. Or, you could put an inlay there. Mahogany neck I presume? How big of a hole we talkin' 'bout?

I can see how that could happen.

Of course you'll have to replace the entire neck since someone is bound to see it (luthier police) and cause you embarrassment beyond Belief. --- Just kidding of course.

Before doing anything drastic like inlay a pattern of pearl dots etc. Which would look pretty cool -- how about trying the Minwax filler pencils? I've made some truly invisable repairs on "A" surfaces, like tables tops for one. I'll not go into detail, I know we just covered this in another thread recently.

Again, an honest mistake don't kick yourself.

Tony, I don't know the exact thread but it's roughly a #8 wood screw.

This neck is completely finished (been playing the guitar for several months). Ken's suggestion is likely as good as any. Having a button on each side of the heel would just look weird I'm afraid.

I've got to admit.......it's almost comical that I read a warning to make sure to drill on the correct side of the neck........and I literally thought to myself what kind of idiot would do that! Well, now I know <smile>

It is probably about an eighth of an inch? Like Ken Cierp said, plug it, and match the grain lines with Min Wax filler pencils. If you can not, then I would go for the inlay.

Don't feel bad. Surgeons have to have the part of the body they are cutting marked with a Sharpie.

And they have still removed the wrong LIMB!! In the grand scheme of things, this is a tiny, tiny mistake!

you could just install a strap-lock into the hole on the bass side.
