12 fret headstock top angle ?

Post by longbow »

Is the angle alittle different on steel string slotted headstock, compared to our normal necks ? From the nut to the rollers end ? The only one I have to compare is a cheap Hoher 12 fret, It look's like the break angle is lower. I tried a sliding bevel, but it's hard to tell. With no string posts the break angle is more no matter what. I would like make a neck for #5, could anyone please give any idea's they have. thanks Dave L.

If you are doing it the Martin way the angle is 15 degrees. I know that I have seen them as low as 12 and as high as 17. Do what works best for you .

Thanks John, 15 degree's is also for 14 fret. I just needed some info, it's hard for me to check unless I buy a 200.00 $$$ neck. Hey maybe you should start selling some, I noticed you only stock 14 fret. I have five rough cut martin necks, I was thinkin maybe to cut off the heel move it up two frets and slot the headstock and see how it looks. It's just a idea, because 12 fret's are hard to find. My deam guitar is a 00028VS and #5 will be one. Thanks Dave L.

Hi David,

Interestingly the other David L has ordered a custom neck from us (KMG) (very cool White Oak and Walnut) we make all sizes and Martin, Gibson -- paddle, slotted, solid, laminated. Anyway, the 12th fret neck blank is much different then the 14th -- I am thinking that just chopping it off is not likely to work out. Measure twice cut once -- $.02

Oh yeah --ditto John on the angle, for grins I also scaled the MacRostie drawing and its just under 15 degrees. There some necks out there with very shallow headstock angles -- Fender comes to mind, I don't believe the nut break angle is an issue.

Yeah Moon is one of the KMG competitors -- I think our pricing is a little more affordable for the same quality level

Thanks for checking guy's, still I thought it was a good question. I use tunners with low height posts for more angle, but the way they dive on a slotted is way more. I guess thats why some say 12 frets have a little more snap. I was thinking of making a form with Kens templates, I have and buying a blanket from John, to bend the sides. Or heck just breakdown and buy a bending machine. The thing is to use Kens templates And Johns bending molds the martin specs, say waist or lower end are a little diff. here and there. I guess the guitars used were a diff. year or the craftman varyed some. What I'm saying is to bend sides with Johns bending machine, would'nt fit in a mold made with one of Kens templates, I'm just trying to get everything I buy to work, ya right#$#@ in a butterfly world. Then again I could use my mega mold that would work with sides from the machine. Ok I'll stop Thanks again.

Hi Dave,

What are you building? Are you saying you have these mismatches or are you worried that you will have mismatches? Sorry for my "density" I am not understanding.
