X-Brace to Bridge Plate Glue Creep

Post by mjmeehan »

Somewhere between having glued down the bridge plate and gluing down the X-Braces I had some glue creep. Now there is a gap on the treble side of the bridge plate along the x brace. It starts at 1/16" on the soundhole side and runs to 3/16" at the low edge.
The bass side of the x-brace/ bridge plate contact is fine.

Now what?!?

If its glued down to the sound board no worries. Move on!

Courious -- what was the clamping method?

That is not glue creep. That is "glue slip" before it set up. Glue Creep is a very odd looking gentleman. You will know when you see him.

Ken- Between the intersection and the end I clamped with a standard type wood clamp- the kind the ratchets down when you squeeze the handle. The end of the brace just had a spring clamp on it. I suspect that the first clamp, which hid some of the gap area, pulled the brace over slightly. I didn't see this when I cleared out the squeeze out, only when I took the clamps off. I'm glad this isn't the issue I imagined it to be.

Tony & John- I think I saw that guy at Woodcraft last weekend... and I didn't want to see what he was hiding!!

Yeah -- we had problems with that type of clamp on the furniture side of the business and actually discontinued using them, we sold them all on EBay. I think its the design of the pad being on an angle that tends to push the pieces around. And of course glue is great lube until it starts to tack.

If you have full contact on the bass side and a tapered gap on the treble side it sounds like you had a poor fit to start with. If it were mine I would take it off and redo.
