Mounting the Strap Pins

Who wouldn't mind going over how you install the pins for the neck strap? Do you center the end pin between the back and top and still have the guitar balance well when hanging from your neck? How do you ream to fit? Do you just tap in place or glue or what?
Any suggestions for locating the pin on the neck? Does location affect balance?
Thanks and I look forward to your responses!

I don't mind, however this is a matter of personal preference and aesthetics.
I do not like the type of strap pegs that get wedged in on the end. I prefer the screw-in type. It only takes the wedge type to fail once to realize why... I center this on the back.
As for the neck, I really like placing that peg around the opposite side of the guitar. That is, if your are right handed the peg would go on the treble side of the heel. If you check out the Taylor guitar site you'll see that they do this with many, if not all of their guitars with pegs.
I find that this set up allows the guitar to hang from the body well balanced without feeling like the guitar is tipping off your body, much like it would if the neck peg was positioned on the back of the heel.
Additionally I like to place a small, round piece of felt under the strap peg. This keeps the peg or button from cracking/scratching/marring the finish, not to mention any tendency to screw it in too tight.
My opinion though, hope others can chime in.

I center mine in the end wedge between top and back. Personally, I don't like the strap going down to the heel, it bothers my left shoulder for some reason. I like it at the headstock...martin sells a little strap that fits through the strings above the nut that keeps it clean and strong. Otherwise, I agree...I put them on the opposite side of the heel unless it is a cutaway. I haven't had to put a strap pin in the neck for a cutaway yet.

Darryl,
I asked a similar question some time ago and received very good info from Bill Cory with respect to neck strap pin placement. Here is the thread in the archives:

I just can not bring myself to screwing in a strap pin into the neck heal of my guitars. I am sure I will hit a bolt or spit the heal.
I did just put in an end pin into the end graft of my parlor. One trick I learned working with violin pegs and the endpin of a violin is to ream the hole to the point where there is still about an eighth of an inch for the peg to go. Pull the endpin and rub it with peg lube\peg dope and push it back in. It will go in the rest of the way. So you end up with a better fitting pin (the pin fits in a smaller hole) with less of a chance of it falling out.

Where in the world would I find "peg lube/dope" ???? What is it? (sounds similar to lard to me <smile>)

It just goes to show you that you shouldn't get involved with that violin't crowd! No, please tell me he didn't do it again, another pun? Good grief.

I ordered some John. I'll use it on my daughters violin if it doesn't work out on the end pin. Is this stuff supposed to make the pin grip better?
