Tenor Ukulele Build

Hi Folks,

I have not posted in a long time on the forum, and thought I would show what I am working on. I am building a tenor Ukulele w/ very curly Tasmanian Blackwood B&S (all done minus binding - still need to do that). The fingerboard I just did is Mad RW with curly Tasmanian Blackwood binding. I also had an oops moment on the neck I was working, and had to make another one this weekend. I had an African Mahogany blank leftover from a billet that John so kindly ripped into guitar and uke sets for me.

Took it to the band saw, and cleaned it up a bit - still being oversized. The Fingerbd is in the lower left of the photo.

I am working on the tenor Ukulele while I wait for my order to come from LMI so I can start pore filling the 2 guitars I am working on, an L-00 and a jumbo.

The way you layed up the peg head is neat; gluing the thickness needed to cut it out on a band saw, instead of using a scarf joint to get the angle. Keep posting pictures as I have a tenor ukulele as an upcoming project.

I thought the same thing John! At first I wondered about strength, but it is a Ukulele, not a steel string and the tension pulled by the trings on a uke is like..what? 8 lbs or so?
OK....so maybe not 8lbs, but certainly less than the 160+ on a SS acoustic.
I think it is a good solution to cutting a scarf joint, but I don't know if it would work on anything but a uke.
I plan on building one of these too in the near future.

For a Uke, I thought this type of neck would be fine. Kinkaede does this for steel string guitars in his book - not sure how good this is for a SS though.

How deep is the body? I'm building a baritone and have the body depth at 3 1/2" at the tail and tapered down to 2 3/4". When I closed the box I thought, Wow, that looks fat! But yours is truly deep. Any ideas or predictions on how this may affect the sound?

Yeah, I made it deep - about normal depth on the butt side, but deeper than normal on the neck side. I am having fun with this one. I will be building another as soon as this one is done for my 8 year old daughter, who asked for one. I'll make sure to make it "normal" depth for her. I have some beautiful Lutz that Shane @ High Mountain sent as packing material! It is too narrow for guitars, but perfect for a tenor. I have some EI Rosewood or African Hog that I will use for the B&S.
