Red Oak well on its way

A good day - she's finally all put together. Now comes the sanding, detail work, then a rich and shiny finish (I do most fervently hope). The back and sides are red oak and they DO match even though the pic does not show it - there is a pattern of grain on the back that shows as little squiggles in the pic but are very nice to see in person. She's gonna be a beaut. Back to work/play! Listening to bluegrass today - cannot always be the cosmopolitan sophisticate! :-)

Tat is bloodwood binding. :-) I call it PITA and for good reason, it is a bugger to work with. Ask Ken Cierp - he had to bend the stuff. I also have the bloodwood veneer for the headstock and it is gorgeous. I'm cutting the slots in it tomorrow for the slotted headstock, a little nervous but I will man up in time to do it.
This may be my last cutaway unless someone requests it. Not only is it harder to do, I don't really like the lines as well as I do the 'regular' guitar lines.

Dave, That is a nice looking guitar! I will be interested to see how your head stock slots go. I am planning an O sized parlor guitar for my brother and I am considering putting in a slotted head stock.

I keep looking at the nice jig that LMI has for routing and drilling the head stock, but the price keeps stopping me.

I like the look of bloodwood, but I got a tiny splinter of it, and that little $%^%^* would not come out. Then it got all swollen and hurt like hell for two weeks before I could finally dig the little sliver out of my finger. I am binding three guitars with it. I might not use it again!!

You know I have bloodwood binding and headplate on my current guitar, and I have to say the headstock under the finish looks pretty cool. Do you have a picture of yours?
So how does Oak compare to other woods for sound?

Kevin - I will get a pic of the headstock when finished.
I'm told the sound is somewhere between mahogany and EIR. We shall see.

Sure looks nice. The ray pattern is what I like about quartersawn oak.

Let us know how the pore filling goes! <smile> I like the idea of using domestic woods. One day I hope to try Cherry, Walnut, and especially Osage Orange. Not soon though.....next is a 00 in Cuban Mahogany and then a dreadnaught in EIR.

That's really looking good! I haven't tried any bloodwood yet, but it sounds alot like the workability of wenge. I love the look of the stuff, though, so I keep using it. Keep us up on this one!
