this is a matter to technique and opinion. I like to set my fretboard to the final shape then glue that to the neck. This way I can set things up to match the fretboard and bring the neck down to it. . This is just my way of doing things.
I am sure you will hear more ways to do this . There is no right or wrong way just your way.

I'm with John and Ken. I don't trace the neck on the f/b, rather I lay out the dimensions on the f/b. Pretty easy to do with a ruler and long straight edge. I then cut the f/b to the right size and glue it on. As noted above, this then provides a reference for final shaping the neck. I glue my f/b's on with epoxy rather than wood glue.

I play thumb over the top and tend to play E style chords full fisted, and a sharp edge is...well...sharp! I round over prior to fretting, fret after gluing on the f/b, and file my fret ends to match the rounded edge. As Tony noted, he does it differently. Probably no wrong way to get there. If you have a guitar with neck that feels great, I'd start by copying that one!
