Ditson had Martin make a Large guitar based on a design they had and it developed into the 12 fret dred design. Martin was making them for Ditson but Ditson fell on hard times and went out of the business. Ditson Allowed Martin to continue to make them under the CF Martin name . Ditson also had a number of other designs that were made by Martin.
If you research Ditson you can see that in the early designs they had the smaller guitars has a shallower waist radius. They developed a larger guitar that had the basic dred shape we are familiar with today. While the martin shape evolved to be a little different it is not hard to see the roots in this design.

Thanks Ken for posting more info. and to John for adding historical value. I wanted to build a 12 fret slope dreadnought and almost started a hybrid type using a 14fret body. After talking to Ken at KMG and learning he was making he exact kit I needed I made my decision. Now it's up to me.
