I think that this is my pitfall as well. I've taken a rasp to a couple of my guitars, and will probably take a rasp to my latest one as well.

As for the OP's thing about a buzzing string, I just cured one on my latest guitar by cutting the nut slot at more of an angle, keeping the depth the same at the front of the nut. That little "ramp" that needs to be cut to ensure good contact with the string is something I often neglect.
