My finish guy did this for 30 years at CF Martin . I have seen adhesion issues with many guitars . It is the finish coats that count and if you burnish the wood , there won't be any tooth for the finish to grab . Filler for me is buffed into the wood. I use the same process CF Martin uses .
I agree if you find something that works keep using it . I do Nitro finishes so you may be right on that point.
