Question on neck profiles
Martin lists the dimensions on some of their necks.
Here is one.
Low Profile with Standard Taper
* Thickness at 10th fret: .646” barrel, .540” barrel edges, .249” fingerboard
How do I locate the “barrel edges”?
The attached photo seems to show the edges around the 2nd and 5th string.
Thanks!

Re: Question on neck profiles
I flailed around with this problem a couple of years ago with indifferent results. As I recall, which may not be very good, I inserted scans of the template drawings into a 2D CAD program (progeCAD) and scaled them so the dimensions I got when I took the dimensions of the images in progeCAD matched the dimensions given for each template (e.g. using your example, I scaled the image until progeCAD said it was 0.646" high.) Then I measured up from the bottom 0.540" (continuing with your example) and drew a horizontal line. Where that line cut the profile located, in theory, the top points of the 0.540" lines.
Or something like that.
Or something like that.

Re: Question on neck profiles
There are so many varying neck profiles out there produced over the years. Just stay within basic shaft thicknesses, ie at the first fret tapering to the 9th fret, and then contour it so it feels good to you. Or if you like Martin necks, go to Guitar Center and measure one, take a pic of the profile and shape it as close to that as you can

Re: Question on neck profiles
That is, in fact, pretty much how I''ve ended up doing my necks, despite all my efforts to copy particular profiles. Measure the top-to-bottom thickness of a neck you like at several points along its length (say,at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 9th frets), cut the neck down to those heights at those points being careful not to get any dips in the taper you create, then round off the edges so it feels right. If you're like me, you'll be surprised how much you need to take off the edges.Kevin Sjostrand wrote: ↑Mon May 26, 2025 10:36 pm There are so many varying neck profiles out there produced over the years. Re: Question on neck profiles
my feeling is that you get it to fit your hand. I sand them with my left hand My main spec is .8 at the 1st fret .9 at the 10th then tweak to fit the hand.
