John, can you expand your comment? I'd love to get an idea of what Gibson (does? did?) that allowed a guitar to be built with the neck joining the body at 90 degrees with enough string rise at the saddle.

Well, I learned something about old Gibson bridges: They were tapered from 1/4" at the treble end to 5/16" at the bass end. This left the saddle quite high at the treble end. This link explains it, with a helpful photo:

on the L2 and L00 they develop quite an arch and they use a typical 1 by 6 rectangular bridge but on others like the J50 the bridge is not radiused the are flat across the top. The L2 and 00 are about 220 wide at the base and taper to 187 to the out side.
