Seems it would depend on how thick you're talking about. Can you laminate a piece of .040 white to .020 black to have a white binding with a thin w/b look from the top? Or am I missing something?

Tim, you are on target. I don't have a good reason for not just using purfling instead of thin binding. I do use the reversed rounded kerfing so there is not a thickness issue.
This is a - how you say? - ah yes, a wild hair. :-)
