I have changed my method to glue on kerfing on the last 5 guitars. I used to apply the glue on the kerf and apply that to the sides. Yes it worked but I have started putting the glue on the rim and working the kerfing into that. I find that I don't have the glue dripping and smearing.
It seemed a lot neater and I didn't see any issues. I know I have a nice layer of glue under the kerfing and the squeeze out was more controlled. Try it on your next build and report back.
