D45 style rosette ring spacing

Post by Kevin Sjostrand »

John,
Just wondering, on the 3 ring 45 Style rosette for Martins, do you know the spacing for the rings off the center of the soundhole?
Well of course you do!! Right, of course right.
Thanks.

what period ?
The 45 rosette changed through the years.
.094 on the rings .115 between the rings I think the mid ring is .350

Well I don't know what period. I guess I didn't know they changed it much.
That is helpful, but less than an 1/8" between the rings, really?

On the 45 they squished them together a bit also the sound hole center is 1/8 closer to the 14th fret.
The overall outside diameter of the 45 is a bit more than the 28 so it was manipulated a bit.
Pre war is different and the inner layout is different. I just took pictures of the Holy Grail in the museum. The allowed me to open the get photos up close. Martin takes very good care of me and allows me to document the instruments in the museum.
I will post pics asap

Thanks John. I did just jump in and do the rosette. I'm not trying to make it look like an authentic D45 really, but it will have some of the appointments. I had .120" wide shell, and I used .060 BWB purflings. I ended up with .120 between the rings, and the center ring is .240" wide. A picture is in the blog section.
Another question for you as this is only my second time using abalone. This is not ablam, but solid shell. I've seen conflicting reports on this, but am I okay to sand a little off the surface of the shell? Will it just expose more color, just different patterns?
I inlaid the shell below the surface of the top, but now that I am flush, I still have a little bit of fuzzy line on a couple of the rings of BWB, not much now, but still about one inch length on two of the rings. I'm thinking if I take it down maybe another .005" they may clean up. What do you think?
