Holding the Neck While Inlaying Headstock

On my first build, I inlaid the headstock logo on the EIR before gluing to the headstock. This time I'll be inlaying the cocobolo faceplate after its glued to the headstock. So its a bit more challenge to hold the neck and inlay on the angled headstock.

Any tips for doing this? Especially, any suggestions on how to hold/clamp the neck so it is stable while inlaying? It would be nice if the neck was held with the headstock closer to level.

I clamp it to my work bench but if you have a workmate they work well . You can make a taper shim so you can clamp it flat in the workmate solidly.

Kevin, watch John's inlay videos and the techniques he shows make an amateur's work look acceptable. You can see the final results in the Blog Your Project for this build.......not great but acceptable.

Darryl: Any inlay I do on the head stock is done with the plate glued on but the head stock not cut to shape. The sides are parallel and easily clamped in any vise.

I use the stewmac vise. Clamp the neck in the vise, so it is square side to side, and tip the neck up or down to find the angle I'd like. Easy enough. If you're vise is on the corner of your bench, it can be done with the body on it as well, hanging off of the bench.
