Potato Chip

Post by Tim R »

Hello all,

I have joined a walnut back for an 00 size guitar project and glued on the center strip, but not braced yet. The back has a potato chip shape. From the center strip to one edge it curves in same the direction as the desired dome shape. Going from center to the other edge it has the reverse curve. The booked matched pieces had a slight warp before gluing up so this is the expected result I guess.

I am concerned that this warping will distort the back dome shape once the braces are glued on. Is this a real concern? If so, is there anything I can do to correct the shape before bracing?

Thanks,

Tim

Once the braces are in , I am sure that will disappear. Allow a few days to let the back plates settle. Most often the movement is RH related.

Thanks John I'll forge ahead. About fish glue: Garage temp. is in the mid-50s (but nice and dry). Any limits on temp range for applying fish glue?

A good rule of thumb , it you are comfortable the glue is comfortable. I would prefer 65 Degrees.

65 degrees?
That's down right freezing around here!

Just kidding... I've been told that in times past it's been cold enough to see your breath.

I've actually been wearing a sweatshirt lately (because I'm kind of a wimp - AND off topic)

It sounds like this piece of walnut was a "rift" sawn set. If you keep it off of the work bench and "stickered" or spaced off of the table, so it gets even airflow on both sides it may straighten out a bit, maybe not.

Regardless, you'll be ok. With the plates been as thing as .100", they don't have the strength to contradict the braces. Once it's glued, it's going to hold it's shape. Especially once the braces are in, and then it's glued to the rim. The shape of the guitar is really already dictated by the braces, and the rim, and there's not much leeway for the back to have a mind of it's own.
