Hmm, use a scarf joint at the tail end? That makes a lot of sense. I'll have to try that. My second attempt at cutting a butt joint for the back binding resulted in a gap - partly because the binding wanted to come away from the body at the waist. The first attempt went better but that was on the top and I had a little wiggle room because any mistake would be hidden by the fingerboard.

John, I assume by a scarf joint you mean you angle the cut at 45 deg from outside to inside, correct? On this scarf joint, do you try to leave the outside joint line in the middle of the upper/lower bouts? Does this mean that the inside line doesn't line up with the centerline of the top/back? Does it look ok?
