Gluing the binding/purfling

Post by MKlee »

I'm installing my first wood binding (with detailed miter joints) and am having trouble procedurally. My purfling is BWB plastic and I'm wondering if it would be okay to glue in the purfling first with CA glue?

I was planning on installing all at the same time with titebond but due to the mitered joints for the plastic AND the wood, I'm concerned about hurrying through the process while cutting precise joints. It seems very simple to dry install everything and then wick in some CA glue around the perimeter to glue the plastic purfling. This is the way I did the tailpiece in the picture below. Does anyone know a reason why this would not be recommended? It would certainly make the binding process easier and make the mitering job much easier too.

Thoughts?

Many builders get everything in line and then wick in ca. seal the soundboard before doing this if you go that route.

Other option is to tack in your purfling miters with ca, then install your purf/bindings, even one side at a time if you don't want to feel rushed. This is what i do... I tack the top end wedge miters, get the top taped and roped up and then come back when dry and do it all over again for the back.

I don't use ca I use tite bond , The glue isn't as much an issue as your fitting. Take your time. Be aware of the waist being the place for a gap to form. I use a bar clamp across the top and back to keep that from happening. Think Down and IN

John, when you install a piece of binding that gets mitered at both do you make a dry run and miter both ends at that point or do miter one end and glue your way around the perimeter and miter the other end when you get close to the end?
