Setting the neck.

Post by jrc127 »

The neck was close to spot on with John Hall's help. But the elevation was off at the bridge (~5/32 above the top of the bridge from the bottom of a straightedge laid along the FB). The FB extension was not touching the top for the first inch or so from the rim.

As I worked to change the angle and decrease the gap between the straightedge and bridge things went wrong. See the photos attached. I've shimmed the tenon and started over - the FB is now mostly flat against the top from the neck to soundhole. I've been able to get the gap down to about 2/32 now, but there is a gap between the body and the wing of the neck tenon.

Specifically,

How do I go about closing the gap between the heel and the rim?

The top is not flat from the neck to the soundhole - slightly domed. Could the curvature of the top be holding off off the heel and should I sand the top flat?

Should I try to change the angle a bit more to close the distance between the straightedge and top of bridge?

John got me back in shape after I "fixed it til it broke"" as he said. Basically, I had tried to finesse the cheek of the neck joint and ended up rounding it a bit. The rounding was holding it off from from the rim. Thanks, John!

Do you want to add anything about the procedure to fix my fix?
