Minimum width for solid linings?

Post by Kevin Sjostrand »

What would you guys recommend be the minimum width used for a solid lining? I was thinking 3/16" maybe. I have some luan mahogany I'd like to try and use for this. I'm going to try and bend it in my new light bulb bender.
Thanks.

you want to have a min of 1/4 inch glue area so side thickness - .250

.20 -.25 +/- is a good thickness -- I think you are going to be disappointed trying to bend wood over .090" in any bender. I'd suggest that you make a laminated lining out of veneer. $.02

I could do 3 x .075" and laminate them....might try that.

I tried kerfing this luan and it didn't work very well. Perhaps the grain was not running the right direction.

Kevin, I'm trying the same thing. Been reading Gore's book and it appears a little extra weight in the sides/lining is a good thing. He also likes solid linings because of their stiffness. I know Mario Proulx uses solid linings so I had already wanted to try them. BTW, laminated linigs are just as good I would think (what Proulx uses in some of his photos).

I thought about trying walnut for the additional weight and easy bending. Still might try that but Gore mentioned Ash as good for linings. I have some Ash on-hand so this afternoon I cut a couple of strips roughly 0.100" thick from the edge of a flatsawn board so the strips will be bent on the quarter. This went well........just need to run them through the sander. I haven't yet tried to bend them but supposedly Ash bends well.

Are the dimensions everyone is suggesting the width of the lining or the width of the lining AND sides? 2 laminates at 0.075" each is 0.225". Add the side and you have roughly 0.300" of glueing surface.

Any benefit to running the middle layer of the laminate sandwich cross grain like plywood is done?

All the "solid linings" I have seen in the past have actually been laminated. Here is the way that Colin Symonds does it: http://www.luthiercom.org/phpBB3/viewto ... 107&t=1889
