Cutting a bolt on neck joint and mating block

Post by   »

Can anyone guide me to an online tutorial or DVD or book that will give a noob good instructions on how to cut/create/form the mating joints for a bolt on neck? I'm striking out so far but will continue to search. Thanks.

Have you seen Robbie O'Briens? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oi9HVsVjtgE

are you trying to tool up for this or doing it by hand? i cut my first m/t neck joint with a hand saw and 3/4" chisel. not doing that again... now i do something like this with my laminate trimmer: (the pic is john mayes', but mine is similar)

I highly recommend Jonathan Kinkead's publication to anyone trying to construct their first guitar from sratch. For that matter it is packed with good info for all builders. $.02

Darren, thank you and no, I'm definitely not looking to do this joint by hand.
Ken, thank you and I ordered the book.
After changing my search words I found what you guys suggested along with this one.

I'd say my next move is to buy the plans for the jig and then grab some scrap from my woodpile and give it a try.

Here's another if you have a 'price no object' budget. That would not be me.

For mortise and tenon joint I do both parts on the table saw. The mortise quite obviously before gluing to the sides. Make the block about 1/8 " longer then you need. Drill two holes to fit finish nails in the bottom of the block about 1/4" in from the sides. Measure from the top of the block the length you want for the mortice and subtract the thickness of the top, approx 1/8".Cut the bottom off block at this mark. Save cut off. Make your mortise cut through and through and then glue the cut off back on using the finish nails as locating pins. An easy clean up on the sanding block and your done. The tenon is easy enough to do with out details.
