Advice re: dye

Post by deadedith »

I have to touch up an end wedge, some wood I dyed an ebony black.

This dye is the real deal - Mr. Cierp turned me on to it - and you really do not want to get it anywhere but where you exactly want it.

My question: will tape along the outside edges of the wedge keep the dye from leaching onto the surrounding wood? Or will dye slip under the tape and cause moi mental anguish? Is one kind of tape preferable over the others? Would a thick band of shellac along the outside edges of the wedge clean up if the dye did seep thru?

Or do you have a better method? I hope so....
Thanks

Dave, don't trust tape. The dye will leach under it. I'd seal the area you don't want dyed with shellac or lacquer.

Dude! Don't die! You have so much to live for! Oh...what's that? Dye? Yeah, use something to seal the wood and tape too.

Exciting!! If it is a water or alcoholsoluble dye, I think :
Do the Tony laquer trick
Tape the perimeter
Brush the edge with a little wax (a minorbrush will do better than a wallpaintroller)

Good luck!

Or I could just mix some lacquer and wax together and maybe a little shellac too, and just spray the mixture on from a distance of 6'?
Just kidding - yeah I guess seal tape and wax would be pretty safe. Or use a black magic marker instead of dye.
