Re: re-sizing a fretboard&neck then re-attaching the fret bo
Dear Forum,
An update on my progress. I have shaved my neck down, trimmed the fb, added side and front dot markers and installed my frets - it has been fun. I am about to trim and dress the frets. Problem: my fret board is cupped laterally to the grain and will even rock ever so slightly on a flat surface. This seems like a problem. Perhaps this occurred during the heating process while I removed it, I don't know. My question: should I go ahead and glue this thing down to the neck - it may press flat given enough force from the caul and clamps - I don't know how that will effect the frets - or it may even split down the middle? Or despite my work that I have put into this fb, should I just scrap it and buy a new one from LMI, etc?
btw - this curvature made the frets go in oddly - as the center of the frets are not seated firmly to the fb - but they are flat relative to each other.
Anybody have any advice?
Thanks,
Danny

Hi Danny,
I really hate to say this, but over the years I've been able to save only a few fingerboards that had to be removed using heat. It sounds to me like that FB is now very distorted. You could try and spray it with water and then clamping it perfectly flat to a bench or stiff board. Usually over flexing in opposition to the bends is required. Again this rarely has worked for me and I most often end up using a new FB. Perhaps John or Rick have a more effective salvage method.

I was afaid of that, thanks guys. I should have realized that I was going to have a problem before adding the markers and frets. But it was a good learning experience anyways. Ken, I was especially glad to see you reply to my post as I have been following your methods for fretting, etc and have built some of the tools you suggested on your website - my current project is supposed to be my 'learner' before purchasing one of your kits!
