You may be able to find a used one that's too worn for metalworking but quite suitable for woodworking. One advantage of getting used one is that it may include some tooling -- collets, drill chuck, clamp set, etc. -- that can add a thousand bucks or more to the cost if you get it all new.

my first mill drill was used paid $500
added the DRO rebuilt motor twice
finally sold it used for 800
got a new one YAHOO
you can do a search figure 2500 to 3500
DRO digital read out
Power feed

they are nice to have.

My secret to inlaying that lizard is CNC. I cut out the inlay using a 1/32" dia cutter in my CNC setup, then I cut the pocket the same way, using the same outline, so it HAD to fit. I'm hopeless inlaying anything else, though I can do dots. ;-)
