French Polish Over Tru Oil

Post by Zen »

Anyone have experience of using Shellac over Tru oil on an acoustic?
I have finished my acoustic with TRu Oil on the back and sides--Lovely sheen and looks great--but I',m a little worried about things I've read regarding tru oil finish not being as hard wearing as poly or nitro and was wondering if I should now rub in a few coats of Shellac over the tru oil to give it an extra layer of protection

I have applied Shellac to the top using the french polishing method and it looks great so I happy enough with that.

Any info would be most welcome and a very Happy Christmas to all here.

No experience with that but I do use tru-oil on my necks. I put on 20 coats, no issues.

Do you do much sanding in between coats on the neck ? I have about 5 coats on --little sanding in between --and it looks about right just now but if you use 20 coats then I have a long way to go.

Thanks for reply

French polishing over TruOil is not a problem. I like a TruOil finish on banjo and guitar necks, but I do french polishing for the final coats on the peg heads for a glossier finish. The alcohol doesn't affect the TruOil.

Thanks for the reply and good to finally find someone who has used this method. I'm kinda torn between being happy with the finish I have now which looks really good, or go all the way and french polish over it . Its rosewood back and sides and I was concerned that shellac and alcohol might affect how it sticks over the tru oil so thanks for that.
