Big Note to Self:

SELF: MAKE SURE YOU DOUBLE CHECK THE EVENTUAL SHAPE OF WHAT YOU'RE CUTTING!

I realized I cut off each side of the headstock veneer, at the wrong angle. This was the only ebony veneer that I had, which is easily rectified. But, I designed the inlay from pieces left over from my fretboard inlay, which I had modified; it wasn't replaceable.

I straightened the cuts by sanding the pieces on the shooting board, not an easy feat since the pieces I cut off went from sharp points to only 3/8" wide. I glued them back on, then sanded and reshaped the cap.

The pilot holes for the tuners look crooked, but they aren't. It's an optical illusion, because the cap is not completely sanded into shape, especially on the left side.

A mistake is only a mistake if you cannot correct it, so this was a learning experience, not a mistake. You can see the pieces that I glued back on, in the first photo.

Thank you guys. I admit, when I realized what I had done, my stomach dropped to the floor.

My luthier teacher always told me --there are no such thing as mistakes--only possibilities !!.

I reminded him of that on the day the router jumped right into the centre of my spruce top creating a good size hole.

I called him down to my bench and told him -"I have just created another possibility here for you Mr Doyle"

Funny at the time...
